Wine Festival

Wine Festival

October

Wine traditions in Moldova are centuries old. Thousands of years ago, wine was used in church rituals and as a trade commodity.

In the 19th century, Moldovan wine was regularly purchased by the Russian Emperor Family. The wine Negru de Purcari was imported by the Britain Queen Family.

In 1878, Moldovan wine from Purcari won the golden medal in The World Exhibition in Paris. The winery, Milestii Mici, was entered into the Guinness Book for having the largest wine collection in the world, over 1.5 million bottles, and Cricova was recognized as the winery with the largest underground tunnels in Europe. The size of the tunnel is large enough for a car to be driven inside it.

In Moldovan villages, wine is produced in every courtyard. The annual Wine Festival in Moldova now attracts people from all over the world to taste the wonderful wine produced here.

The Wine Festival is held every year in the center of Chisinau, since 2001, on the second weekend of October. It lasts 2 days. You will have the opportunity to try different types of wine and liquor, enjoy barbeque, meet people, and have a whole Moldovan cultural experience. Folk music and dance events are planned in an open-air area, and participants can even engage in the traditional hora, a collective dance symbolizing unity.

Don't forget to buy a nice collection of wine for yourself or as a gift for as low as 10 Euro a bottle. It is worth being there!
